How to prevent rear-end collisions
Good seeing habits
Keep your eyes moving; scan the road
Shift your focus of vision to different points on the highway in front of you and beside you
Use your mirrors as a tool
Look well ahead on the highway
Make eye contact with other drivers when navigating roadways/parking lots where maneuvering may be difficult so you see them and they see you
Slow down when you see conflicted drivers
Rear-End accidents → account for 25% of all collisions
Proper following distance can help prevent rear-end collisions
Minimum following distance for a sedan/SUV is 4 sec
Limousines and stretched vehicles are minimum 6 sec provided ideal road conditions
Extend following distance to 6-8 sec for poor weather or congested areas
Avoid tailgating large vehicles i.e. box trucks or tractor trailers
Following these vehicles too closely hinders your line of sight
