HDH: Part 1: Entering The Highway & Establishing Lane Position

  • When on approach ramp use mirrors to check side and rear, keep attention where you are going

  • Be aware of other vehicles stopped in front of you

  • Try to keep coach moving even in heavy traffic

  • Use acceleration ramp to build up to highway speed, use entire ramp

  • No matter what action, always signal movement letting signal flash 6 times before merge

  • Adjust speed to traffic flow around you, obey speed limit

  • Stay in proper lane

  • Establish both speed, position, and center vehicle in lane to provide safe space around vehicle

  • Stay in the right lane and keep lane changes to a minimum, except for interchange and merge areas

  • Move to center or left lane if laws and traffic flow allow, signalling intentions then move back

  • If no left lane change allowed, slow down to allow merge

  • Be aware of blindside
