HDH: Part 2. Establishing & Maintaining Safe Following Distances

READ

  • Establish safe following distance, 6 sec following rule

  • 6 sec of space is the minimum safety margin

  • At 55 mph it takes nearly 300ft to bring your coach to a complete stop, air brakes can add as much as 32 feet to stop the coach

  • 6 sec gives you 330ft to stop in ideal road conditions

  • When travelling at higher speeds or inclement weather conditions, increase your following distance to 8 or more seconds

  • Anything less than 6 sec following distance is tailgating

  • Set a pace just below those passing you to ensure 6 sec following distance

  • Do not worry about following other coaches to the same destination, treat each coach as a separate charter
