HDH: 5. Avoiding Dangerously Loaded Vehicles, Traffic Packs & Exiting The Highway

read

  • Any vehicle carrying extra load, cargo can shift, fall, etc.

  • Change lanes if it is safe to do so, slow down to help avoid hazard

  • Traffic often flows in packs, and can cause congestion

  • Try to keep safely between the vehicle packs, let the pack ahead stay in the distance and maintain your speed so the pack behind can maintain their distance

  • When approaching exit, signal and change lanes early, begin to slow down, activate turn signal as you near exit ramp, always check mirrors particularly on blindside to ensure it is safe to exit

  • Keep to posted speed on exit ramp

  • Look for vehicles whose drivers appear uncertain on whether they will exit
